Final League Night Report

Rochfortbridge Player of the Year Weekly League Comes Down to the Final Night.

The Rochfortbridge Player of the Year Weekly League concluded on Wednesday 10th June after six weeks of fiercely competitive golf. Running every Wednesday evening from 6th May, the format consisted of 36 holes singles, combining 18 Nett and 18 Gross scores. Players were allowed to discard their lowest weekly score, meaning only their best five weekly points totals counted towards the final standings.

From the opening night, the competition was exceptionally close, with very little separating the leading players. Going into the final evening, it had developed into a two-horse race between Jack Donoghue on 42 points and Andrew Coyne on 36 points.

Andrew's task was straightforward but difficult – he needed to win the final night and secure the maximum 12 points available, while hoping Jack would finish outside the top five. With plenty still to play for, the final evening produced a dramatic conclusion worthy of the competition.

As scores began to come in, it looked as though the title race would go right down to the wire. Mark Kelly produced a phenomenal score of 83 to claim first place and the full 12 points. Included in that remarkable performance was a course record score of 41 (-13), an outstanding achievement.

Andrew Coyne finished second on the night, earning 10 valuable points and keeping his title hopes alive. This left the situation much clearer: Jack Donoghue simply needed to finish inside the top six to secure the league title.

In an incredible twist, Jack Donoghue and Pat McCarthy finished tied for sixth place. The tie could not be separated on the back 18 holes, meaning the countback went to the back nine. Jack emerged victorious, securing sixth place and the crucial five points that would ultimately decide the championship.

Those five points brought Jack's best-five-night total to 47 points, edging out Andrew Coyne by the narrowest possible margin, just a single point.

A fitting finale to a superbly contested league.

Final Weekly League Standings

Jack Donoghue – 47 pts

Andrew Coyne – 46 pts

Gerry Coyne – 40 pts

Acknowledgements

A special word of thanks must go to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly on the course throughout the league. Their efforts ensured the course was presented in immaculate condition each week.

Thanks also to Trish McCarthy, Declan Usher and everyone else who provided refreshments on the evenings, helping to create a great atmosphere around the event.

Finally, thanks to the Club Committee for approving the current format of the competition. The combination of Nett and Gross scoring proved hugely popular and contributed significantly to the success and competitiveness of the league.

Player of the Year Update

The Weekly League forms part of the overall Rochfortbridge Player of the Year competition, where the top four players at the end of the season will qualify for a final Matchplay event.

The current standings are:

Gerry Coyne – 88 pts

Jack Donoghue – 84 pts

Mark Kelly – 74 pts

Andrew Coyne – 60 pts

With several major competitions still to come before the end of September, there is plenty of pitch and putt left to be played and much can change before the final four places are decided.

Next Event

The next club competition is the Bord na Móna Cup, which takes place on 5th July.
