Have been to the fore in later years in the technological revolution, and have served Pitch and Putt administration to the highest level in Ireland. An immensely proud club - their new jerseys are a thing of beauty and the envy of the country.
Squad:
Higher individual honours may be in short supply, but this is called a team competition for a reason. Conceivably the Westmeath Inter-County team (they even have the manager), they are a very solid squad, and they have an excellent camaraderie, both on and off the course. Have maintained form throughout the season, and are probably second-favourites.
Captain:
Liam Buckley (64):
A captain by name and nature, if Collinstown are to win they will need their captain to perform to his maximum. A very good Senior player, but also very composed. If he pairs with the brother, they’ll be hard to beat in the doubles.
Mick Buckley (47):
A true competitor, and a winner at that. Will need to dovetail well with Liam to get the team off on a sure footing. A match-winner in the singles for Collinstown.
Alan Hanlon (69):
Alan is coming back to the “Pyscho” of old, and is slowly but surely getting to the place where he wants to be. As competitive as ever, he has played some excellent pitch and putt this season. He will be the man to light the fire under his teammates if needed.
John Browne (79):
Showed some great courage for Westmeath during the Inter-co’s in Clonmel, John is a fine player. Has bundles of top-level experience and will be a tough customer over 18 holes in Bruff.
Paddy Browne (N/A):
The Daddy of the Collinstown team, Paddy has seen it all before. Useful backup if called upon, Paddy’s experience will prove vital to the cause
Larry McGinn (187):
One of the sports true gentlemen. While not getting out as much, or performing to his own high levels, Larry is still a dangerous player. This man deserves to be a winner of this competition. Excellent club-man.
Rene Jan Bloem (42):
Bloem is another fierce competitor, with plenty of skill to match. A true matchplayer, Rene will be keen to add some silverware to the plaudits he has received. A potential ace-in-the-hole for the Westmeath men.
Martin Carter (N/A):
The Westmeath Inter-County manager is a man on a mission. As determined a fellow as I have come across and is very single-minded when needs be. I’m told this transfers itself onto a pitch and putt course – Carter will not be found wanting if called upon
Peter Dolan (117):
The archetypical “club” senior. This competition is made for the former Athboy man. Has done well in this year’s competition and is a very thorough player. Has settled into his new surroundings well, and a victory here would be the icing on the cake.
John McDonald (241):
Another solid squad man for the Collinstown outfit. There will be no panic if John is called upon on Sunday. Very capable of shooting low in an individual round, and has proved so in the past.
Path to the Semi-finals:
Winners of the Ultra-competitive Group D
Results:
Vs Tullamore 9-0 (W) @ Lough Owel
Vs Shandon 5-4 (W) @ Ryston
Vs CPM/Portmarnock 4-5 (L) @ GCC
Vs Bellewstown 5-4 (W) @ Castletown
Vs Lough Owel 8-1 (W) @ Kilbeggan
Vs Lucan 6-3 (W) @ GCC
Quarter-Final
Vs Kilbeggan 7-2 (W) @ Tullamore
Prospects:
Quietly confident, and probably have the edge over the Old County/Loughlinstown combination in terms of preparation, choice, and experience. Well-used to Bruff too, but arrogance is not a trait these men suffer from. They’ll be well-drilled and won’t take any point for granted until it’s chalked down, kid.
A comprehensive few results along the way, their win against Kilbeggan in the Quarter’s was conclusive, and really they’re on a roll.
Match vs CPM/Portmarnock was P&P of the highest order. Crucial wins against rivals Lucan & Shandon decisive in emerging from group of death.
Should make the final, but regardless they’ll fight to the death and give themselves the best opportunity to win.
