Squad:
Captain: Aidan Whelan: Handicap: -9:
Aidan won the Junior scratch cup at the start of the year and the sure-to-be-receptive greens in Bruff will be to his liking, as will some of the shorter pitches.
Kevin Doyle: -6:
Is missing this Saturday, and really they can ill afford to miss a player of his calibre. Inter-county standard, he is a huge loss.
Derek Ryan: -7:
Great season from the big man. A great performance in the National Matchplay, he got to the club handicap Matchplay final, as well as being runner-up in the Captain’s Prize. Victory in the Club Strokeplay shows how good a player Derek is.
Aidan O’Brien: -8:
My source tells me that Aidan is something of an enigma; he could produce absolutely anything on a given day, but that he is very steady at the same time, putts really well and has good positive experience of Bruff too. Partnership with Stephen Tobin vital in the doubles.
Liam Sheridan: -7
A player I’m previously familiar with through their club updates, but seemingly not playing much this year.
Stephen Tobin: -9:
Another vital cog in the St Pat’s wheel. Stephen won the Captain’s Prize this year, and has consistently won in the club throughout the year.
Ger Doyle: -13:
I’m informed that Ger is going to be hard to be beaten off the high handicap, and is an excellent putter, a huge bonus in Bruff.
Path to the Semi-finals:
Runner-up in Group C (on points difference to Lakeside)
Results:
Vs Lakeside (L) 2-7 @ Hillview
Vs Tullamore (W) 5-4 @ Ryston
Vs Ryston (W) 6-3 @ Bagenalstown
Vs Tramore (W) 9-0 @ Cunnigar
Vs Bagenalstown (W) 7-2 @ Tramore
Quarter-Final:
Vs Collins (W) 5-4 @ Tramore
Prospects:
When I first saw the group they were in as the quarter-final draw was made, I didn’t hold out much hope for St. Pats. Pitted against an excellent Collins side, there was only going to be one result. But the Enniscorthy guys came through with flying colours. And on reflection, Group C had a hell of a collection of good intermediate and juniors. Ryston and Tullamore would both have very good handicap players, so qualifying was no mean feat.
I would put them as underdogs, purely because the remaining teams are so strong, but Wexford teams always tend to produce the goods when needed most, and these lads will surely be no different. They’ll need to get a good start in the doubles, and they have a good chance of picking up 2 points heading into the singles.
